The Psalmist states that he will lift up his eyes to the hills in search for help. These hills (the Hebrew actually says “mountains”) are those upon which Jerusalem was built (Psalms 87:1). So the Psalmist looks towards Mount Zion (the location of the Temple) as the source of his strength. This aid he seeks is EXTERNAL to him.
This is understandable under the Old Covenant where God never indwelt man. However, in the New Testament, God’s help is now resident within every believer — we have His Spirit in us! (See John 14:16-18, Rom. 8:26). Therefore, the believer doesn’t look to the hills for help, God NOW resides on the inside of him.
