“Let the weak say I am strong” — Joel 3:10

“Let the weak say I am strong” — Joel 3:10

This text is often used to encourage “positive confessions.” But it has been oft misconstrued. It is not an admonition to God’s people who in weakness should confess strength.

Contextually, it refers to the heathen nations raising up to come against the Lord in battle (see verses 1-4, 7-9). The heathen nations are being ridiculed — “you who are ACTUALLY weak, keep saying you are STRONG” (i.e. keep deceiving yourself).

The recipients of this text is thus the sinners, not God’s people. It is not an encouragement but a statement of mockery.
