What is the blood of Jesus and what does it do?

When asked this question, the average Christian might answer “the red liquid that dripped from His side at Calvary” and which “appeased the wrath of God.”

We already established that God never needed animal sacrifices and blood to forgive sins. This means that the blood of Jesus and what it does was must carefully understood. It definitely is not a pacifying sacrifice intended to calm God’s anger.

Observe that throughout the Bible, the blood is said to do what the Spirit does.

The blood justifies (Rom. 5:9), the Spirit justifies (1 Corin. 6:11). The blood sanctifies (Heb. 13:12), the Spirit sanctifies (1 Corin. 6:11). The blood cleanses (1 John 1:7). The Spirit cleanses (1 Corin. 6:11). The blood of Jesus can thus be equated with the Spirit of Christ, they are one and the same! This blood was not offered to God to appease His wrath but IN MEN to cleanse their hearts for sin! (See Heb. 9:11-15). The shed blood of Jesus is His Spirit in all who believe today (Rom. 5:5).
