What is the sin that easily besets? (Heb. 12:1)

Note that the previous chapter (Hebrews 11) speaks of the old Testament saints. It gives details of their exploits. The reader might be tempted to be distracted by all the great things they did. And instead of putting faith in Christ (which is the essence of all they did), he would then begin to idolize them instead. This is the sin that easily besets (surrounds) the Jews. The writer of Hebrews instructs them to take their eyes off the Old Testament heroes and look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of faith.

The entire Book of Hebrews is to show the Jews that Jesus is greater than the personalities and practices which they idolized (held in high esteem) under the Law e.g Angels, Moses, Joshua, the High Priest, the sacrifices, Abraham, David etc.
