Many accolades have been ascribed to our Lord Jesus Christ, one of which is “the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley.” This phrase is gotten from the Songs of Solomon 2:1-2 text — “1 I am the rose of Sharon,
And the lily of the valleys.
2 Like a lily among thorns,
So is my love among the daughters.” (NKJV)
The Book of Songs is an ancient collection of love songs between King Solomon (called “the Beloved”) and his Shulamite lover. Although it can be allegorized to represent Christ and His Church (and rightly so), this is the main context of the book.
Having said that, observe who is called “the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley” — it is NOT the Beloved but the Shulamite! In fact, the Beloved refers to her in vs. 2 as “a lily among thorns.”
So even if the Book of Songs could be used as a picture of Christ and His Church, Christ would not be the “the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley.” It would be the Bride!
